The

Charcoal Drawings

“Every drawing I create tells a story, if it doesn't, it's decoration”

                                                                                            S. Twardus

I choose charcoal over all other graphic mediums because, as a sculptor, I like to use my  hands along with the lump or vine charcoal pieces to get as close to the paper as I can. Using my fingers as one of the tools  I essentially sculpt the drawing as I add and remove the charcoal.

Most drawings are part one of an idea or inspiration for sculpture.  Drawing first the figures and placing them in an environment, helps to make the eventual sculpture come together very quickly.

I often draw favorite places or moments in time, trying to give them, with charcoals dramatic light and shadows, the romanticized look they have in my memory. Like old black and white movies  or photos.
